Nick Catanzarite, Extreme Team Member (Northern ID/Southern MI - USA)

I grew up in northern Indiana/Southern Michigan.  In high school I ran track and started for the varsity football team.  I broke my back in a ski racing accident in Winter Park, CO when I was seventeen.  After three months in the hospital I went on to graduate with my high school class in 1995.  The following fall I began classes at Michigan State University in Lansing, MI.  After graduating from college with a BA in philosophy in 99’ I moved out to Winter Park to try disabled skiing.

In 2001 I won the downhill at the US National Championships in Big Sky Montana.  In 2002 I qualified for my first Paralympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah where I finished 5th in the downhill.  That same year I was named National Sports Center for the Disabled.  I spent the next six years traveling and competing at World Cup events as a member of the United States Disabled Ski team.  At the 2006 Paralympics in Turino, Italy I finished 4th in the Super G event, just .08 seconds off of the podium.

In 2007 I was awarded the Willy Schaeffler Scholarship for a disabled skier to attend the University of Denver.  With the support of the scholarship I am currently pursuing a dual degree in Law and International Sustainable Development.  At the same time I am continuing to train and compete as a ski racer and look forward to competing in the 2010 Paralympics in Vancouver, Canada.
